The list of Bradford's worst litter eyesores, as voted by the district's residents, will contain few surprises for any regular readers of the T&A Letters page. We often carry complaints about the state of Leeds Road, which has the honour of taking the top spot. Many readers have bemoaned the unwelcoming appearance of this, one of the main routes into the city centre.

Oak Lane, Whetley Hill, Duckworth Lane, Manningham Lane, Toller Lane, Great Horton Road, Heaton Road...These places have all been named and shamed from time to time by our readers. So has the Manywells landfill site at Cullingworth, the one location among the top ten that isn't in an inner-city area.

However, these represent only the very tip of the litter iceberg. The 10,000 Bradford householders who responded to the invitation to name "grot spots" actually identified 3,000 eyesores.

This has been a worthwhile exercise. Those members of the public who are offended by litter have done their bit. The Council has embarked on its mission to clean up the mess site by site. Bradford should gradually become a tidier place.

Whether it remains that way, of course, is a different matter entirely. Those Bradford people who take a pride in their surroundings and the environment will no doubt take full advantage of the various systems and facilities the Council has introduced for refuse collection and recycling.

Those who continue to make a mess of the place, though, will need to be persuaded to mend their ways, through increased education backed with legal action against businesses and individuals who are slow to get the message.
