Detectives were today re-examining a number of sex attacks in Bradford after a 16-year-old girl was raped in woodland.

The New Year's Eve attack in Baildon has led officers to study files on previous incidents in the area over recent months.

The new inquiry comes after detectives sought information about ten incidents in rural spots in Baildon, Bingley, Shipley and Rawdon between April and September last year.

A 19-year-old Riddlesden man has since been charged with three counts of attempted rape. But detectives revealed today that possibly two less serious offences, which occurred around the same time, remained undetected.

Detective Superintendent Phil Sedgwick said it was "routine procedure" to compare the attacks.

He said the 16-year-old had been out in Bradford on New Year's Eve but got a taxi to Shipley, arriving in the town centre at about 11pm or 11.15pm.

She began walking to a friend's house in Southcliffe Drive, Baildon, but then got into what she believes was a taxi which dropped her off.

"She discovered her friend was not at home and walked off," said Det Supt Sedgwick.

The victim, who was thought to be in a confused state, next recalls wandering in nearby Fairbank Wood, between Southcliffe Drive and Valley View.

"It was then that she was subjected to a serious sexual assault," said Det Supt Sedgwick.

The victim suffered cuts and bruises but did not go to hospital. Police said they had not publicised the attack until now due to "operational reasons".

The suspect is white, in his 20s or early 30s, of medium build and with short dark hair. He had brown eyes and wore dark clothing.

Det Supt Sedgwick said: "We would like to hear from anyone who was in that area of Baildon at the time and may have seen a girl of this age in a dishevelled state or possibly the attacker.

"We also need to speak to the taxi driver, who was Asian and possibly driving a red Ford Mondeo, who took the victim from Commercial Street, Shipley, to Southcliffe Drive at Baildon."
