The price commission is to investigate plans by the giant Allied Breweries, which includes Tetleys, to increase the price of beer by 2p a pint. The investigation comes only a week after Allied, the Double Diamond, Tetleys and Skol combine, disclosed past year profits up by 22.5 per cent to a record £77.2m.

The 60 half-crown dresses advertised in last night's Telegraph & Argus were sold in six minutes today at Busby's store where a queue - 200 strong at 9am - began to form at 6.30am. The dresses were made up in error with red bodice and sleeves and black skirt. The women were attracted by the material, worth £3-£4, and most of them snapped up the bargain without taking it from its box.
