We're nearly there - but don't stop fundraising yet!

That's the message as the Telegraph & Argus Bradford Can... Cancer Research Appeal nears its target.

The appeal now stands at £900,000, with only £100,000 to go before it hits the magic £1 million.

That money will go towards cancer research at Bradford Royal Infirmary and Bradford University.

And once the target is hit, Cancer Research UK will boost the cause by another £5 million.

The appeal began in September 2001 and since then a huge variety of events have taken place to boost its coffers.

From huge companies and organisations, to individuals and families, people across the district have supported the cause enthusiastically. The cash will fund the development of new anti-cancer drugs at Bradford University's world famous Cancer Research Unit.

They will be tested on patients in clinical trials at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Tish Burton, Bradford Can... Appeal manager, said: "This £900,000 includes definite pledges and some promises, plus the money in the bank.

"This last £100,000 will be the hardest to raise. Don't stop now and keep the cheques coming - we can do it."

Mrs Burton also reassured fundraisers that all the money raised - even if it was collected after the final target was reached - would help fight cancer.

She said if they were fortunate enough to raise more than £1 million, extra cash would go towards cancer research.

One of the most popular schemes is the Bradford Can... Appeal Commemorative Wood at St Ives, Harden, Bingley.

Oak, rowan and birch trees can be bought in memory of a loved one or to celebrate an anniversary or birthday.

So far, more than 100 trees have been planted with further planting days organised for January 22 and March 3.

Trees cost £50 each.

And the final big event of the appeal will be a Celebration Ball at Bradford's Hilton Hotel on February 15.

The black-tie evening has been organised as a thank-you to the people of the city for their hard work.

Organisers are hoping to be able to announce they have reached £1 million at the glittering event.

Tickets for the ball, sponsored by HSBC and Schofield Sweeney Solicitors, cost £40 each or £400 for a table of ten.
