A scheme to provide CCTV cameras at a notorious car-crime hotspot was formally launched this week.

Two cameras are to be installed, in Low Mill Lane and at the Keighley railway station car park.

The cameras will be monitored 24 hours a day, all year round, from a central suite in Bradford. The suite has a direct link to Keighley police station, where live pictures can be seen and any incidents recorded.

The £48,000 scheme is the result of a partnership between Bradford Council, Arriva Trains and county transport body Metro, which together have contributed half the funding. The rest of the money has come from Keighley Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) and the Bradford District Crime and Disorder Group.

The Low Mill Lane area of Keighley has long been blighted by vehicle break-ins. Councillor Simon Cooke, the council's executive member for corporate affairs and regeneration, said: "This is a problem that the council, police and people in Keighley have wanted to tackle for some time.

"Back in 2001 ourselves, Metro, Northern Spirit and the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway were involved in an unsuccessful bid to the Home Office for funding for the scheme.

"Undeterred, people have continued working on the project and it has finally come to fruition with the installation of these cameras.

"This is a great example of groups working together, and we hope it will reduce the fear of crime in that area of Keighley."

The cameras have been provided by Garndene Communication Systems Ltd, of Huddersfield, and the scheme is due for completion by the end of March.
