It might not be Cougarmania, but it is the best possible start for the new-look Keighley side.

Nearly 1,400 spectators braved the rain to watch Doncaster Dragons get rolled over 21-14 by a devastating display of no-nonsense in-your-face rugby.

A side boasting three new signings and a returning hero went toe to toe, sometimes literally, with the bully-boys from the division above for a deserved first victory of the season.

New boys Ricky Helliwell and Ian Sinfield were outstanding, while Jason Ramshaw provided the calm nerves and imaginative play in an all-round display of might from a Cougar side whose attitude and fire bore little resemblance to last season.

"I am absolutely delighted with this win," said an ecstatic Gary Moorby after the opening-round victory in the Arriva Trains Cup.

"We showed we aren't going to be pushed around out there and all the lads were magnificent.

"Our forwards built the platform for the win with their hard work, but it was an all-round team effort.

"I thought Jason Ramshaw had a typically strong game - you could have predicted he would have come back like that.

"I am a happy man, and I am happy for the players and the spectators."

With such enormous promises of improvement from Moorby, the Cougars needed to let their hands do the talking and it took just 116 seconds for Sinfield to do just that.

The South Yorkshire side set the tone when Matt Walker piled into the new recruit late, and Sinfield's response led to a 29-man brawl.

At no point did a Cougar back down, sending a clear message that they meant business and would not be pushed around.

This was described after the game by fellow new boy Helliwell as the spirit of "one-in, all-in", although it did leave the incident on report and Helliwell in the sin-bin after 14 minutes for yet another instance of laying-on at the play the ball.

When he left the field the Cougars were 4-2 down after an exchange of penalties but the game soon turned.

Needing only 12 men, the impressive and effervescent Paul Ashton sent a long ball wide to the third new signing Gareth Hewitt, who in turn handed it to Andy Robinson to run it in on the left wing.

Five minutes later, and with Doncaster reduced to 12 by the sin-binning of Paul Gledhill, loose forward Ramshaw weaved his magic, sending a chip over the defensive line for Ashton to bravely and athletically touchdown before slamming into the advertising board.

He recovered sufficiently to make the conversion before Matt Walker pulled one back to make it 12-10 at the break.

But the Cougars were in charge and their superiority was confirmed when Matti Firth's high kick was fumbled by the Dragons defence and picked up in the in-goal area by Helliwell for a debut score.

Ashton added a conversion, another penalty and a drop goal in his 13-point performance with only a consolation try for Chris Ross dampening the home side's spirits.

The manner of the victory left Helliwell predicting a 60-point haul over Thornhill Trojans in next week's

Challenge Cup tie.
