Jamie Lawrence may have played his last game for Bradford City. The tough-tackling midfielder is wanted by several First Division rivals.

And it is likely a deal could be sorted within the next few days.

Lawrence, back in action after a cracked rib, said: "I've got a feeling something might happen very shortly, possibly this week.

"I'm out of contract at the end of the season and Bradford can't offer me anything here. At the end of the day I have to look out for my family.

"If you play the way I do people are always going to want you. I like to think I'm 100 per cent all the time, no matter if I'm playing well or not, and managers soon spread the word about players like that.

"I've got so many good memories here, especially being part of the famous Bradford team that went up to the Premier League and then stayed up."

Walsall and Reading are rumoured to be among the clubs eyeing Lawrence, who joined City for a bargain £50,000 from Leicester in 1997. Ideally the Jamaican international would prefer a move nearer his London roots.

City boss Nicky Law has already loaned out midfielder Paul Evans to Second Division Blackpool and the Welshman, who has struggled to make an impact with the Bantams, made his debut in Saturday's 2-1 win over Northampton.

Law is an admirer of Lawrence's no-nonsense qualities but with a new £85,000 wage cap being introduced, the player believes he could get a better offer elsewhere.

The return of Lawrence and Ashley Ward could not prevent City from losing their first league game in 2003 at Rotherham.

The 3-2 loss at Millmoor was also the first time Law had been beaten as a manager by old foe Ronnie Moore.

Law played it down but admitted: "We didn't deserve to win the game. We lost too many battles and gave three poor goals away."
