Dudley Hill had to pull out all the stops to overcome Victoria Rangers 24-14 in the first round of the GMB National Cup at Newlands.
Hill looked to be coasting when they led 10-0 at the break following tries from Sean Dickinson and Liam Jarvis and a Chris Robinson conversion.
Robinson added a penalty on the restart but centre Tony Fretwell sparked a Rangers fightback when he intercepted and raced 60 metres to put Mick Sigston over.
Centre Mick Faulding pounced on a huge up and under from stand off Mick Walker and the outstanding Aussie half back then fed the supporting Kenny Smith who crossed near enough for prop Tim hunt to add the extras and give the Vics a well deserved 14-12 lead.
Robinson rallied his troops and two further converted tries from James Haley and Dickinson earned Hill a trip to Widnes St Marie's in round two.
Odsal Sedbergh lost 35-24 at home to LOWCA and Clayton came unstuck 40-12 at Latchford Albion.
The Villagers only trailed 16-4 at the interval but paid the penalty for poor defence in the second half.
Craig Pickthall and Danny Murgatroyd (2) scored their points. Prop Chris Parkinson was their best player.
Queensbury took complete charge of their tie at Westfield to win 30-4. Second row Matt Galtress started the ball rolling and loose forward Lee Charlton soon followed him over the whitewash.
Wingman Darren Brown raced 50 metres to the corner to close the half 18-4.
Man-of-the-match scrum half Carl Smith then scampered over and veteran packman Gary Prentice scored the final try. Stand off Paul Drake kicked five out of five conversions.
Keighley Town recorded their best win of the season with an emphatic 52-16 win over Selby Warriors.
Leading 18-6 at half-time they were guilty of taking their foot of the gas and Selby got to within eight points at 24-16, but the return of Neil Kennedy got Town back on track.
They ended up running in nine tries, the highlight being a 50-yard solo effort from 43-year-old Gary Baker.
Darren Lynham's return has undoubtedly given Town another dimension to their play, and he ended up with a try and five goals.
Town's other scorers were Darren McNulty (2), Andy Stokes, (2) and a goal, Jamie Benn, Quentin Sneed and Kennedy. Billy McKay completed the scoring with two goals.
Town's reward is a trip to Cumbria to play Wath Brow Hornets a week on Saturday.
Pennine League Premier title chasers Birkenshaw looked on course for the points when they led Champions Elland 18-10 but the match was abandoned at half-time following alleged Elland abuse to the referee.
Birky's tries came from Simon Armitage (2) and Morton Robinson and they are convinced that the result should stand.
West Bowling A were outgunned 36-8 at Division One leaders Westgate Redoubt. Centre Chris Scott scored their try and scrum half Domenic Brambani kicked two goals. Prop Paul Booth was in tremendous form throughout.
Queensbury A ended Silsden Park Rangers' unbeaten Division Two home record 26-10.
Rashid Mahmood scored his first try of the season and Bury posted further tries from Andy Barraclough, Kristian Friebach and coach Martin Potts.
Undercliffe won the Division Four relegation battle at home to York Groves 26-6. Paul Lynn, Johnny Hotham, Matt Smith and Liam Jordan crossed for the vital touchdowns. Wyke conceded six first-half tries at home to leaders Newsome Panthers but salvaged some pride in the second half to eventually lose 48-12. Dean Mitchell (2) and Steve Houson crossed for the black and whites.
