Herbert Sutcliffe, one of the all time greats of Yorkshire cricket, has died at Skipton. He was 83. Herbert Sutcliffe scored more runs in first class cricket than any other Yorkshireman and his record opening partnership of 555 with Percy Holmes in 1932 stood for 45 years. His demeanour on and off the field made him one of cricket's best known personalities during the inter- war years.

Miss Horsbrugh, Minister of Education, said in the Commons today that the charge for school dinners would be raised from 7d. to 9d. with effect from March 1. Proposals for adjustments in income scales, where considered necessary to avoid hardship to parents, would be considered on their merits.
