A brave youngster from Cullingworth who has battled against cancer is on the road to recovery - but a dream trip to Disney World has been cancelled due to high costs.

Jessica Bell is in remission after seven months of chemotherapy treatment and is back at school.

She and her family had hoped to travel to Disney World in Florida but the plans have been cancelled because of the cost. They have instead decided on a summer trip to Euro Disney near Paris.

Jessica, 12, was diagnosed with Birkett's Lymphoma in February and underwent seven months of chemotherapy at St James's Hospital in Leeds.

"Jessica is on the road to recovery and all the chemotherapy has been done," said her mother Angela.

"She's on visits to the hospital to monitor her blood and make sure the cancer has gone. She still aches but she's doing really well. It will be another five years before we know if she has the all-clear."

Speaking about the Florida plans, Mrs Bell said: "We got a list of insurers from the hospital and the quote we got was for £1,250 which was capped at £65,000. It just wasn't adequate for America because of health-care costs and we would have had to get a few top-up policies.

"We decided to have a week in Alcudia in Spain and a week at Euro Disney, so we should still have a great time."

Jessica has been going back to Parkside School on a part-time basis and is receiving student support to help her catch up with classmates.

The family thanked people in Cullingworth and neighbouring villages who raised cash for Jessica.

A party night at the Five Flags Hotel in June raised more than £6,500.

Some of the cash was raised by Vikki Garwood, of Denholme, who auctioned badges she was given by fellow rescue workers while she volunteered with the clear-up operation at the former World Trade Centre site in New York.
