Families have remembered relatives and friends by planting trees at a commemorative wood.

A total of 93 oak, birch and rowan trees were planted at the Telegraph & Argus Bradford Can...Commemorative Wood at the St Ives estate at Harden near Bingley.

It was the second in a series of planting days supporting the Bradford Can...Appeal to raise £1 million for cancer research in Bradford. Trees, which cost £50, can be bought in memory of a loved one or to mark occasions like a birthday or anniversary.

People who had bought trees came to help plant them. The day was supervised by tree-planting group Forest of Bradford.

In November, the first 103 trees were planted at the 1.5-hectare site, owned by Bradford Council. Bradford-born television presenter Richard Whiteley planted the first sapling.

More planting days are being held at the estate on March 3 and March 26. Eventually there will be 1,000 trees in the wood.

Tish Burton, Bradford Can...Appeal manager, said demand for trees has been huge. "The second planting day was very successful and we have finalised the date for a fourth day because of the public support," she said.

Every buyer gets a certificate and plaques in the wood will show each tree's location.

The Bradford Can...Appeal is now only £100,000 from reaching its £1million target. The cash will go towards investigations into the disease at Bradford Royal Infirmary and Bradford University. Once the £1 million is reached, Cancer Research UK will put another £5 million into the work in Bradford.
