A middle-aged man was beaten up and left for dead on a busy Bradford road last night.
Police were trying to discover why the 48-year-old man was attacked at the junction of Leeds Road and Killinghall Road in Laisterdyke at 7.45pm.
But the nature of the attack on the Asian man and the motive for it has so far left officers baffled.
They believe three men were responsible for the attack which left the Leeds man fighting for his life in hospital with severe head injuries.
The attackers drove off, but police were today trying to establish what kind of vehicle was used.
A member of the public found the injured man lying on the pavement.
Early today, doctors at Bradford Royal Infirmary took him off the critical list.
Police cordoned off a large patch of grass and shrubbery near Latimer Street, just off the busy road junction.
Today officers were carrying out house to house inquiries in the area.
Anyone with information is asked to ring police on (01274) 376459.
