A homeowner was confronted by a scar-faced intruder who had sneaked into his home in Brunswick Street, Bingley.
The man entered the house through an insecure door at about 2.30pm on Monday and was spotted by the occupier.
Keighley police say the intruder fled and took the house key with him.
He is described as 5ft.7ins, of thin build, with a long, vertical scar on his cheek and aged between 40 and 45.
He had short brown hair and a bushy moustache.
He wore thick, dark glasses, a black raincoat, blue jeans and black brogue shoes.
Anyone who saw a man matching this description is asked to call Keighley police on 01535 617080.
