Everton reserves 2, Bradford City reserves 1: City played more than a half without a recognised goalkeeper after Nicky Beach was stretchered off.
Beach was left in agony after a 32nd-minute challenge from Everton's Kevin McLeod, who was sent off.
The youngster was taken to hospital with a badly-damaged ankle although x-rays later revealed no break.
With no substitute keeper on the bench, City were forced to put skipper Robert Morgan in goal.
But the stand-in stopper did not concede in the rest of the match.
Danny Cadamarteri played his first game since November 9 and lasted 71 minutes against his former club, who included World Cup stars Lee Carsley and Niclas Alexandersson.
The Swede had a part in Everton's opening goal after 13 minutes following pressure by McLeod.
Alexandersson's goal-bound header was half-blocked as far as Leon Osman who fired in from close range.
Egypt international Ibrahim Said then crossed for winger McLeod who put his shot the wrong side of the post.
Everton doubled the lead on 24 minutes with a penalty after a foul on Osman. Carsley beat Beach with the spot-kick.
Beach's last involvement before the injury was a stunning save from Osman.
Down to ten men, Everton failed to pressure Morgan in the City goal and could only manage a series of scrappy half-chances.
City trialist Patrick Bannister hit the post after 66 minutes before Juanjo pulled one back with a
brilliant free-kick from 25 yards.
The angle from the left touchline looked tight but the Spaniard, who has found himself frozen out of Nicky Law's first-team plans, beat the fully-stretched Steve Simonsen and fired into the top right-hand corner.
With four minutes left, Osman should have restored Everton's two-goal advantage. A mazy run took him into range of Morgan's goal but his right-foot drive flew inches wide.
City reserves: Beach (Flynn 33), Bentham, Lee, Fishlock, Morgan, Wright, Cadamarteri, Almond, Danks, Bannister (Sanasy 80), Juanjo.
