Residents of a Pool-in-Wharfedale sheltered accommodation complex are being forced to walk to their access bus because of parked cars blocking the way.

The people of Churchill Flats appealed for an access bus to be provided to take them to Morrisons for a weekly shop.

Last week saw the first outing of the bus, but after the trip residents were told that it was impossible for the vehicle to get to the bottom of their street and the service would have to be cancelled.

The street has hit headlines before because of the lack of parking, making it almost impossible for emergency vehicles, delivery vans and visitors to get to the flats.

Churchill Flats Warden Dawn Attwood called Metro, and it has now agreed to pick up the residents, some who are elderly and disabled, from the top of the road.

But Ms Attwood is still not completely happy with the situation.

She said: "We have had a lot of problems down here and the council has said that it will provide more parking spaces.

"If there were more spaces, people would not have to park on the side of the road and in turning areas, but this has been going on for so long that some of the residents think it will never happen."

Churchill Flats resident Mavis Pickard said there were problems with the trip.

She said: "We were all looking forward to the trip but the driver was very surly and we had terrible trouble getting in and out of the street.

"The day after we were told there would be no more bus service. Hopefully we will be able to sort something out, but the parking problem down here is really holding us back."

Fiona Whitehead from Metro told the Wharfedale Observer: "We are going to stop at the junction of Mill Lane and the residents will have to walk up to the bus.

"After the first attempt at providing the bus, we had a site visit to discuss the access problems and it was decided that because of the congestion down there we would have to stop at the top of the road."

Ms Attwood added: "This has been an ongoing problem and the trip was a nightmare just because of the parking situation.

"A supervisor came out and had a look and took some photos and they later rang me to say that it is impossible to get a bus down here for safety reasons.

"I was told something might be sorted out and we have now been told that as long as all the residents agree, they will stop at the top of the road.

"I am pleased that the service will continue but the whole point of an access bus is that it is a door to door service.

"It is a very frustrating situation when you work to set services up and problems like this get in the way."

Leeds City Council was unavailable to comment.
