Yarnbury 41, Wheatley Hills 7
YARNBURY welcomed their visitors from Doncaster for a re-arranged fixture. The home side almost had to call off the game due to a waterlogged pitch but sterling work from Ground Chairman Kevin Wray and his helpers ensured the game went ahead.
Yarnbury knew that this was a game they had to win in view of their lowly league position. Despite several changes due to injury and holidays confidence was high.
Within four minutes Yarnbury took the lead when winger John Bramham danced round his opposite number and raced behind the cover defence to score. A penalty by Steve Galbraith made it 8-0 after ten minutes.
Yarnbury's pack began to dominate and they allowed the backs plenty of ball.
Prominent were Ian Moule and Steve Miller at the line-out. It was from a forward drive that Ben Horner crashed over and Galbraith added the extras.
A rare moment of indecision allowed Hills back into the game with a try but another Galbraith penalty made the half-time score 18-7 to Yarnbury.
It was important that, playing into a strong wind, they scored first and this they did through the boot of Galbraith.
Then it was over as a contest as two quick tries from Steve Hopes and a second from Bramham increased the lead.
There was now only one side in it and a final try by Galbraith, which he also converted, and his fourth penalty gave Yarnbury their best win of the season in difficult conditions.
This was a proud moment for coach Bob Hood and 47 year-old Dave Hornby who warmed the bench as a replacement.
