Colne and Nelson 1st XV 6

Keighley 2nd XV 20 - Keighley had to pull out all the stops to win this game on a very wet and windswept field, and only resolute tackling and driving gave them the win.

They did not start well and Colne took advantage of a penalty under the posts to go ahead. Keighley playing with the wind and the slope soon found the conditions were not conducive to quick running play. They were unable to breach the Colne line until Morgan Bailey forced his way over for a try. Simon Atkin added the two extra points.

With only twenty minutes gone the Keighley team was down to 14 men after Ben Woodwiss was sin-binned for a tackle on Colne's dangerous-looking wingman.

Luckily with the strong wind in their favour Keighley did not have to defend against any kicks up field. Balderstone and Lockwood were putting in some strong tackles in the middle.

Keighley added to their score with an Atkin penalt, but as Woodwiss returned to the field Bailey replaced him in the 'bin' for illegal use of the boot.

Keighley had to play the first ten minutes of the second period with only 14 men. Keighley's pack had to battle for the next 40 minutes and they came out on top in all departments.

Even without Bailey the front row of Gibson, Scott and Griffin ably assisted by Walsh and Southgate controlled the scrums. Good loose play by John Gibson was well supported by Peter Southgate and only stout tackling by Colne stopped Keighley from a further score.

Bailey returned to the field and soon was involved with a flare-up amongst the forwards. The referee calmed the players down, and it was at this point Bailey left the field to be replaced by Midgley. The game was still simmering, but to their credit Keighley stuck to playing rugby.

This seemed to sway the referee's decisions in favour of Keighley. Atkin added three more points with a penalty goal. At last after a series of scrums and penalties on the Colne line Keighley were awarded a penalty try under the posts.

Atkin added on the extra two points to put Keighley clear. With ten minutes left trouble brewed again and Colne had one of their second row men dispatched to the sin-bin. They tried to strengthen their pack with further substitutes but to no avail, and Keighley ran the clock down by keeping the ball with their forwards.

Keighley 3rd XV 12

Sandal 45

Keighley were beaten on a heavy pitch by a good Sandal outfit containing several fringe first team players. The score line does not reflect the commitment shown from all of the Keighley players, particularly the forwards who were more than a match for the Sandal pack.

After only seven minutes of the game, Sandal had scored twice and looked likely to reach a cricket score by halftime. However, good tackling from Race, Thornton and Muff in the forwards and Brookes and Cook in the backs restricted Sandal to scoring just one more try and the sides turned around with Sandal winning 17-0.

The game was put out of sight within 15 minutes of the re start, Sandal scoring three converted tries to make the score 38 - 0. With only pride to play for, Keighley started to create some chances of their own. Solid line out work from Clarke gave the backs more possession and Scarborough and Whitaker gained some good yardage.

With about 15 minutes remaining, Sandal collected the ball near to their own line and attempted to run the ball out of defence. A big hit from Birkett prevented any further progress and the ball spilled to Leach who crossed the line for Keighley's first try.

Five minutes later, Keighley had their second try and it was Birkett who turned from provider into try scorer following persistent work from the backs. Brookes added the extra two points. Sandal scored in the last minute of the game.
