Victorian beer, llamas and a colourful street market will be among the attractions at a huge festival in Bradford's World Heritage village.

A two-week celebration will be held in Saltaire in September to mark 150 years of Salt's Mill, which opened on the 50th birthday of its founder Sir Titus Salt.

Organised by Saltaire Village Society, the festivities will incorporate all aspects of the famous model village from the mill and park to the cobbled streets and Leeds-Liverpool canal.

Eddie Lawler, one of the organisers, said if the event was successful he hoped it would become an annual date in the village calendar.

"Saltaire means so much to so many people and we hope that many will come from far and wide to take part in this special fortnight," he said.

The festival will run from September 8 to 21 and will cover seven themes: history, visual, classical music, transport, fun and games, markets and jazz, folk, poetry and prose.

The key date will be Saturday, September 20 - the date the mill opened.

Mr Lawler said: "We're hoping this day will be the biggest one, with events for all the family throughout the village.

"We'll be looking at a fair in Roberts Park, music and dancing in halls, and a firework display to finish off the night. It will be a festival not to be missed."

Organisers are now raising cash to ensure the full programme can go ahead.

A £500 grant was donated by Shipley Area Panel's community chest and a variety of fundraising events are being held over the next few months.

"We are making excellent progress and we are now calling on people to show their support, get on board and share their expertise with us," said Mr Lawler.

A meeting will be held in Victoria Hall in Victoria Road on Monday, February 17, from 7.30pm for new volunteers to enlist to help in a number of areas
