A father and son appeared in Court today charged with the murder of Bradford gun hero Tasawar Hussain.

Derek Elener, 64, and his son Barry, 41, are accused of shooting Mr Hussain dead as he chased them from the scene of an armed raid in Manningham last month.

As part of the same alleged incident, the pair were jointly charged with robbing security guard Vitorio Declemente of £40,000 outside Madina Travel in Lumb Lane on January 27.

When they appeared at Bradford Magistrates Court for their first hearing today, they faced two further charges of robbery and attempted murder relating to a raid at the Yorkshire Bank on Bradford's Manchester Road two years ago.

Prosecutor Gavin Howie said detectives were linking the Eleners to the armed attack on February 27, 2001, in which security guard Christopher Hodgson was shot as robbers made off with £25,000.

The pair were led up into the glass-panelled dock of a packed Court 4 flanked by three uniformed security guards.

Derek Elener, of Reevy Road, Buttershaw, was dressed in a purple and white striped shirt and cream cotton trousers. He stared intently at the magistrates' bench and his defence solicitor, Neil Allerton, throughout the case and spoke only to confirm his name and address.

Barry Elener, of Freshfield Gardens, Allerton, stood impassively throughout the ten-minute hearing dressed in a plain pale yellow T-shirt and jeans. He nodded to the bench as he was taken down to the cells.

No applications for bail were made and both men were remanded in custody to appear before Bradford Crown Court next Tuesday.

The court heard that the pair were arrested last Friday and have been interviewed by detectives on a number of occasions since while being held in police custody.

Dad-of-one Tasawar Hussain was killed by a single shot to the chest after he and his friend Azram Hussain followed robbers from the scene of a raid on Madina Travel in Lumb Lane to Jowett Street by Thorton Road.

The 36-year-old, from Heaton, was described by his wife Naila as "wonderful, decent and brave". The 22-year-old widow, who is pregnant with their second child, has been left to bring up their five-year-old daughter Haarisah alone.

Mr Hussain's death sparked a massive police inquiry with detectives trawling the area for clues and speaking to hundreds of people in bid to gather information.
