Bradford's Pop Idol will not know if he can drive on the Long and Winding Road until he gets his driving test result - on Red Nose Day.

Gareth Gates, who was one of the six stars filmed behind the wheel for Celebrity Driving School, has a nerve-wracking wait until March 14 to see if he has passed.

BBC producers filmed the 18-year-old singer's all-important driving test last week in South East London.

But the result is being kept a secret, until the Comic Relief day.

Driving a Vauxhall Corsa, the talented East Bowling teenager joined Big Brother's Jade Goody, EastEnder's actress Natalie Cassidy (Sonia), Simon Day from The Fast Show, actress Nadia Sawalha and comedian Paul O'Grady (Lily Savage) on the programme.

Viewers will see their reactions as they all learn of their results at the same time.

To get the best chance of winning his licence, Gareth had a crash course at Queensbury-based Driver Training and Instructors College in autumn last year and practised on the streets of Bradford. At that time he had a number one hit with The Long and Winding Road with Will Young.

His driving instructor, Stephen Pickard, said he thought Gareth had a good chance of passing his driving test first time.

"He was a natural really - he took to it quite well," said Mr Pickard.

"We were off within a short space of time on to the main roads.

"He took in what I was telling him. I would've thought he would've been a person with a good chance of passing first time.

"Having said that, it's not an easy thing to do and they are very strict on the test itself."

For the Comic Relief programme, Gareth was taught by instructors of the original series.

His mum Wendy told the Telegraph & Argus that he had loved every minute of his lessons.

But once on tour he had no time to practise, she said.
