Bradford's International long distance swimmer Melanie Smith, 20, is to make an attempt on the Channel swim this year, if she can find a sponsor. Melanie, voted the city's most promising prospect by the Bradford Amateur Swimming Association, hopes to make her Channel attempt in the summer when conditions are more likely to be favourable.

Progress was being made in the North today with the freeing of snow-blocked roads and the opening up of bus routes. Paths were driven through to some cut-off villages. The road has now been cleared up to Queensbury boundary past the Old Dolphin at Clayton Heights. Bradford Corporation employees broke through today with a bulldozer and mechanical navvy.
