A heritage trail created by a Bingley historian is to be given a new lease of life.

The Better Bingley Campaign is to relaunch a walk around the town which was partly drawn up by Ernest Davies, who died in 1994.

Mr Davies was involved in conservation work and local history and led guided walks around the town.

The heritage trail includes the Arts Centre, through Myrtle Park down to the River Aire and back along Riverside Walk to Ailsa Well, the Brown Cow pub, All Saints Church and Treacle Cock Alley.

An extended version takes walkers across the river and up to near St Ives countryside park. A further suggested walk goes up to Three Rise Locks, with the option to continue to Five Rise Locks. Historic buildings and interesting features will be highlighted along the route by information boards and sign posts.

William Oxley, owner of the Five Rise Locks hotel and restaurant, in Beck Lane, Bingley, is leading the campaign's sub-group responsible for the scheme and said he hoped it would be launched by summer.

"Bingley needs to get ready for the completion of the relief road as this will be an excellent opportunity for it to become a thriving town which attracts tourists. We are in a beautiful location with the backdrop of the hills and this trail will invite people to venture into parts of the town that they might not even know existed," he said.

Campaign secretary Donald Wood said Mr Davies would be delighted to see the trail back on track.

"He would probably say 'hallelujah' as he was all for promoting Bingley's heritage," said Mr Wood.

"If ever a man was dedicated to Bingley, he was. The trail will be of benefit to residents and tourists and we will be looking at possibly making it a cycle route too."

Town centre manager David Dinsey said the trail would be a welcome addition to the town.

"It's a great idea to re-establish the trail. Often people don't know what's on their doorstep and the walk will be of benefit to residents and visitors," he said.

The group is keen to hear from firms or individuals who would like to sponsor signposts or information boards along the route.
