Claus Jorgensen will write his name in the club record books with a goal against Brighton tomorrow.

If he nets against the First Division's basement boys, it will extend his incredible run to seven successive league games.

That would put the City midfielder on a par with Jack Deakin 65 years ago and John McCole in 1959.

Ashley Ward is backing Jorgensen to do it - while admitting he is getting a bit jealous. Ward said: "Claus is on the sort of run where he goes out there almost knowing he will score.

"He's on a remarkable record and we're all pleased for him.

"Periods like that in your career don't come around very often. When they do it's great and you hope it will always continue. As a striker, you end up being a bit envious of Claus. Maybe his success will rub off on me as well."

Jorgensen, one of up to a dozen players out of contract in the summer, is hoping to sit down soon to discuss a potential new deal.

And he admitted: "I'm in the best form of my life. I keep trying to play it down about all the goals but it is getting more difficult."

Ward broke a 13-game scoring drought at Wimbledon and believes that could be the springboard for a goal burst of his own.

He said: "Any striker will tell you if you go a few games without scoring it plays on your mind and drains confidence. Even Michael Owen feels it."

City have a huge score to settle tomorrow. Brighton won the first encounter 3-2 in November, ending a run of 12 successive defeats.

Boss Nicky Law said: "It was the low point of the season and we want to put it right. It's very important we don't concede any ground tomorrow.

"Steve Coppell has done a good job down there, getting the players to believe in themselves again. They want to get off the bottom but the incentive is also there for us to get three points nearer to 50."

David Wetherall is back in contention and could be on the bench after coming through 45 minutes for the reserves.

Victory over Brighton would be City's fourth straight home win - their best run since the promotion charge four years ago.
