Eight track and field records fell in the West Yorkshire Sports Hall Athletics Championships at Beckfoot School.

And two of the record-breakers in the field of 144 came from Bradford schools, Bethany Staniland (The Girls' Grammar School, Bradford) and Michael Langley (Thornton Grammar), both winning places in the West Yorkshire team for the North East Regional finals at Thornaby-on-Tees next Saturday.

Bethany's time for the under-15 girls' four-lap race was almost three seconds faster than the winning time for the under-15 boys' race! And, just to prove her versatility, Bethany also set a record in the shot.

But if its real variety that you want, then Heckmondwike Gram-mar's Hannah Francis-Smithson provided it by winning five events at under-13 girls' level - the two-lap race, standing triple jump, standing long jump, vertical jump and circuit relay - including two records.

She put triple-winners Charles Dacostoa (under-15 boys, Tong) and Michael Langley (under-13 boys, Thornton Grammar) in the shade. If West Yorkshire are successful they will go forward to the national finals at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.

Other Bradford area members of West Yorkshire team: Bethany Rugan (Beckfoot), Matthew Wilson (Bingley Grammar), Harrison Foster (Salt Grammar), Larry Abbott, Sam Burnhope and Leon Smith (Oakbank Sports College), James Kennelly and Sarah Mallinson (both Parkside).

Among other record-breakers were: Fraser Davies (Guiseley) and William Bogle (Green-head).
