Vigilantes could be patrolling the streets of Yeadon after fed up residents are revolting against egg-throwing yobs.

Residents on the Hawthorn Estate have had enough of youths throwing eggs at their windows every weekend.

They have decided to take a stand and catch the criminals themselves.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, said: "Enough is enough. It has gone too far now. I am fed up and so are other residents around the Hawthorn Estate.

"The police give the kids warnings but still they do it. They just don't realise how much time and effort it takes to remove egg from the windows.

"Some older folk are becoming ill due to this stupid game they play. When they throw these eggs they run away, so by the time the police arrive they have gone.

"Myself and a few other younger residents are about to make sure we capture these vandals red-handed using handheld video cameras and then using our rights as citizens to place the vandals under a 'citizen's arrest.'

"Call it being a vigilante if you want, but the normal member of public does have the right to place someone under arrest."

The residents are intending to place anyone throwing eggs at homes under citizens arrest and will hold them until the police arrive.

They will be considering private prosecutions against the culprits in an attempt to get them to clean up the mess they have made.

"Our message is stop your egg throwing now or we will catch you and prosecute," he added.

"It would be so nice to see these teenagers cleaning the egg off our windows and I am sure we will soon see them doing that.

"It is a shame that we have to resort to carrying out this military style operation within the Hawthorn Estate as it is generally a nice area to live in."
