Thousands of Bradford schoolchildren were sent home at lunchtime today because of a national teachers' dispute. Parents were told that meals could not be served in many schools and were asked to make other arrangements. And emergency plans were underway to provide meals for children whose parents work.

The first of the proposed four National Service registrations for this year will be held on Saturday, when young men born between April 1 and June 30, 1935, are due to register. It is estimated that for the proposed four registrations 285,000 young men will register, of whom about 1,500 will come from Bradford.
