Keighley's town crier will have a new bell to peal at the Keighley Day celebrations, thanks to a donation from a town councillor.
Cllr Laurence Brocklesby handed over the Janet Bell, named after his late wife, to town crier Mike Walton at last night's town council meeting.
Mr Walton was delighted with the gift following a long search to find a new smaller bell.
He said: "Our current bell is too old and too heavy for regular use. But this is a superb bell. It rings beautifully."
He added that the bell would be first heard in public as part of the Keighley Day events.
Cllr Brocklesby said: "I wanted something in memory of my wife but also to symbolise the new town council. Janet's maiden name was Bell and I thought it was very appropriate."
Mrs Brocklesby, a mother of four, died of cancer in July, 1995, at the age of 60.
She had suffered for three years after doctors had originally diagnosed her problem as a frozen shoulder.
When they eventually diagnosed cancer she was given just three weeks to live. The couple decided to take one final holiday with their extended family to Bridlington, where she died.
