Thousands of fundraisers turned up as Sir Jimmy Savile fixed it for people to take a last walk around High Royds Hospital for charity.

The sponsored walk was organised by Otley Chevin Rotary Club and raised more than £2,000 for the Global Polio Eradication Progra-mme.

The veteran fundraiser led the 1.5 kilometre walk around the grade-two listed buildings of the Menston hospital on Sunday.

Each participant was asked to contribute £1 to the charity, which aims to eradicate polio world-wide.

It also gave residents one last opportunity to walk around the grounds before any new development begins.

Rotary club member David Johnson said: "The day was absolutely tremendous.

"Sir Jimmy turned up at 10.30am and stayed with us until 3pm.

"He must have talked to more than 400 people and signed hundreds of autographs. He led the walk from the main clock tower and he was just like the Pied Piper with everyone following him. It was a fantastic site.

"We raised in excess of £2,000 and Sir Jimmy gave us a cheque for £500 for the charity. It was very very generous of him. It was totally unexpected, he had already given us the use of his name for the advert and his time it was so nice of him to help us out further."
