The Labour candidate for Bradford's University ward has withdrawn because of the Government's policy towards Iraq.
Sikander Mahmood was due to challenge the Conservative seat at the Council election on May 1.
Mr Mahmood was president of the Bradford Bus Workers branch of the Transport and General Workers Union until he stepped down because he wanted to go into politics.
He said: "It is a decision made much more in sorrow than in anger. The Government's policy towards Iraq is so utterly wrong that I am unwilling to seek election on behalf of the Labour Party."
The 45-year-old bus driver added: "It is certain that war, however successful in the early stages, will not advance the cause of peace, progress and democracy."
Councillor Ian Greenwood, leader of Bradford Council's Labour Group, said: "The University Ward will select another candidate who I'm sure will be excellent."
