SHIRLEY Poland has broken new ground at Rawdon Golf and Lawn Tennis Club by becoming the first lady in the club's 107 year history to be elected club President.
Mrs Poland is an Honorary Life Member of the club based at Buckstone Drive and has been playing golf there for 30 years.
She has been Lady Captain on three occasions, the last time being in the club's centenary year of 1996.
She has held other posts within the club having been President of the Ladies Section and Honorary Secretary of the club for a period of 12 years.
She is currently secretary of the Ladies' section.
Her husband, former police officer Don, has recently been elected Captain of the Bradford Union Past Captains team while Mrs Poland is Vice-Captain of the Bradford Union Ladies' team.
Mr Poland has been both Captain and President of Rawdon Golf and Lawn Tennis Club and is the oldest surviving former President of the Bradford and District 8-15s Association.
The Polands were both Captains of the Rawdon club in 1978. Mrs Poland plays off a handicap of 18 while Mr Poland is off 11.
Rawdon Golf Club has a strong ladies' section with 50 members.
The ladies have had the vote at the club for 30 years now and Mrs Poland's election to high office is an indication of the regard in which she is held at the club.
