Keighley Albion Cats 50 Barrow Ladies 0 - The Cats returned to action last Sunday with a nine try demolition of Barrow Ladies. Barrow currently hold third place in the league, one above Keighley, but after this performance it is hard to see why.
Barrow produced sporadic forays into the Keighley half but any danger was quickly snuffed out by the resolute home defence. Keighley were well on top but struggling to put points on the board.
Eventually Saima Hussein finished off an overlap on the left to get the scoreboard moving. The conversion was missed but Keighley continued to apply the pressure. However concern was mounting as half time approached that the Cats couldn't add to their score. Then Jodie Billing cut through to score a typical try to put more daylight between the teams. Again the extras were missed but right on half time Keighley extended their lead when Laura Ackroyd re-gathered her own "bomb" and scored under the sticks for a delightful individual try. This time the extras were added and the Cats turned round 14 points to the good. The second half was all Keighley. They found the driest part of the pitch down the left flank and exploited it to the full. Billing was cutting through the defence almost at will, and with Hussein feeding off the breaks, Barrow were hanging on by their fingertips. Hussein scored a second under the sticks before Sarah Shillito got in on the act. Backing up another Billing break she stormed down the wing for
her first try and soon after darted through a gap for her second. Meanwhile Ackroyd had found her kicking boots and was converting every try. Jodee Loader then scored a fine individual try which was again converted and Barrow were demoralised. Hussein and Shillito both completed fine hat tricks and there was still time for the Cats to introduce former under 16s Captain Laura Moore for a satisfactory senior debut. In a fine team performance it was hard to pick out individuals but Gemma Liddon, playing in an unfamiliar second row slot, just shaded Billing and Sarah Walsh, who led the pack magnificently.
