WHARFEDALE'S under-15s have reached the final of the Yorkshire Cup after a 11-0 win at Moortown.
They made amends for their exit from the competition at the semi-final stage last season and can look forward to the opportunity for revenge as their opponents in the final will be old adversaries Harrogate, who won that encounter last year.
The final takes place on May 4 on a neutral venue yet to be decided.
In front of an army of travelling supporters, the young greens turned in an awesome display, particularly when it mattered in defence.
The visitors started well and had much the better of the early period with plenty of possession in their opponents' half. This pressure resulted in a penalty, which captain Steven Moon slotted with his usual composure.
Apart from a few forays into Wharfedale territory, which were defended with relative ease, the remainder of the first half was played out in the Moortown half. With half time approaching, strong tackling resulted in a turnover ball, which Wharfedale recycled quickly. Good handling through the backs allowed Stuart Priestley to finish off the move with a try out wide.
Leading 8-0 at the interval, and now playing with a slight breeze advantage, Wharfedale then showed tremendous character, determination and discipline in the second half. Moortown are a good side and were not going down without a fight. They threw everything at the Greens but the defence held firm time and time again, with everyone throwing their bodies on the line when it mattered.
Excursions into the Moortown half were few and far between but on one of these occasions, the home side's backs were caught offside which allowed Moon to further relieve the pressure with another coolly taken penalty.
This was a tremendous victory on away soil and a credit to the whole squad who worked tirelessly throughout.
