Mosslands School 1,St Mary's Menston 2: West Yorkshire champions Menston St Mary's marched into the last 16 of the Under-13 English Schools Football Competition when they visited Mosslands School, the Merseyside champions.
In this last 32 of the English Schools competition St Mary's travelled to Liverpool expecting a very tough game.
However, it was a very hardworking St Mary's team that applied the early pressure. St Mary's were rewarded with an outstanding volley from midfielder Sam Jewell to put the Menston team in the lead.
The pitch was remarkably hard and with a strong wind the playing conditions were not easy for the two very good footballing sides.
St Mary's stuck to the task creating numerous opportunities and were unlucky not to gain another goal before half-time.
Mosslands continued to attack St Mary's but the St Mary's defence was equal to the task with Paul Whitley and James Holland proving particularly effective.
In both attack and defence Callum White was inspirational for St Mary's. His work rate, passing, tackling and positive running was an example to his teammates and a constant frustration to the opposition. All this pressure was rewarded with a second St Mary's goal from Andrew Bowmar.
The Merseyside team never gave up and indeed became stronger as the game went on. With 15 minutes to go Mosslands got a well-deserved goal to make the score 2-1. St Mary's absorbed the pressure for the last tense few minutes to win the game.
The Man-of-the-Match was St Mary's Callum White with an outstanding all-round display.
St Mary's now go through to the last 16 of the English Schools Cup where they will face the winners of the Manchester and Lancashire champions fixture.
That means an away trip to either Wright Robinson Sports College in Manchester or St Bede's School, Lancashire, on Saturday, March 29. If successful St Mary's know they will face an away tie in the semi-finals and the final of the competition will be staged at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium.
The team is coached by PE teacher Craig Thornton who said: "We have been fortunate to have a really talented set of lads all at once. They have worked very hard for their success and we hope to progress further."
