Bradford Park Avenue 2, Frickley Athletic 2: Avenue tossed away a two-goal cushion to hand relegation-threatened Frickley Athletic a vital survival line.

Trevor Storton's men were cruising to a straight forward victory against a very average visiting team when an Anthony Jackson wonder strike and an Adam Russell header in the final two minutes turned three points into one.

A special promotion ensured nearly 300 turned out to see a match which had Avenue on top for long periods without ever needing to break into a serious sweat.

But taking things too easy towards the end let the Frickley side, playing in a borrowed used Avenue academy kit, get the draw.

"I'm gutted," said Storton after his side failed to notch up their fifth league win on the bounce and move into fifth place in the UniBond Premier table.

"We took it too easy, treated it like a kickabout and we had already won the game and let them off the hook.

"But saying that, the first goal for them was a one in every ten years job."

From the off it was clear the current Bradford side were in a position to out-play an old boys team that contained no less than five former Avenue men.

Andy Hayward, Robbie Painter and Andy Quinn all struck volleys and half-volleys of varying range straight at keeper Mark Samways while Simon Collins was guilty of wasting a fantastic chance from an Andy Wright free-kick by heading the ball too steeply downwards and could only watch helplessly as it bounced over the bar.

Despite the 0-0 scoreline after the break, it was clear the home side were capable of stepping it up at any time, something they did after 54 minutes.

Jason Maxwell was once again fouled 40 yards from goal and Danny Walsh hoisted a dangerous cross over.

An almighty goalmouth scramble ended with Collins manoeuvring himself into position with his size and blasting in from close range for his fourth goal in five games.

This lead was only preserved by a superb double save from the increasingly impressive Chris Howe in the Avenue net - he got down well to twice save impressively from a dangerous Curtis Bernard one-on-one.

And despite Maxwell then wasting a good four on three break, it was soon to become 2-0 through top scorer Hayward. Painter,

in for the hamstrung David Donaldson, lifted a high chip over the keeper from the near post for Hayward to come in at the back.

The former Rotherham man did his best to miss, but the ball hit the keeper on the line from close range and went in to double the Avenue lead.

After 88 minutes, Avenue were cruising towards that final whistle and ready to celebrate breaking last season's league points tally.

Jackson then stepped up to fire home a 35-yard pile-driver in off the top of the post for one of the best strikes ever witnessed at Horsfall Stadium.

Andy Russell followed up with a far-post header a minute later and it was mission accomplished for a Frickley side fighting to stick in the UniBond top flight.
