A Bingley vicar will soon own the longest title in the Bradford Diocese.

Reverend Sue Wharton, who is curate in the Bingley Team Parish, will become the priest-in-charge of Weston with Denton, Leathley, Farnley and Fewston with Blubberhouses.

The mother-of-two's new role will entail looking after four parishes in Washburn and the Mid-Wharfe valley.

Mrs Wharton, 44, was ordained four years ago, before which she worked as an account manager for a science equipment, plastics and glassware manufacturer.

She read microbiology at Leeds University and trained for the ministry on the Northern Ordination Course.

She said: "I'm very much looking forward to my new role. I certainly have a big task ahead of me and it will be a challenge to make sure each parish gets a fair share of my attention, but I think my background in sales has given me helpful experience in working in a large area. I used to look after Yorkshire and Humberside in two and a half days a week."

She will relish moving from an urban parish in Bingley to the countryside.

"I grew up in rural Warwickshire, and my husband Rob grew up on a farm," she said. "But I will certainly miss Bingley and all the friends I've made there".

Mr Wharton runs his own landscaping and garden design business. The couple have two children Michael, 16 and Joanna, 14.
