Accrington Stanley's 3-1 victory over Altrincham on Saturday ensured them of a place in the Conference and balanced the books for Bradford Park Avenue.

The win handed the Lancashire club the title with four games remaining, but also ensured £2,500 would be winging its way across the Pennines to Horsfall Stadium.

When Avenue sold winger Rory Prendergast to their rivals for £10,000, only £7,500 was payable up front. The rest was subject to promotion being achieved.

"I don't know exactly when we will receive the cash," said Avenue secretary Steve Burnett.

"But we are now entitled to it as part of our agreement with Accrington Stanley, so congratulations to them on their promotion."

The £2,500 brings the total Avenue have received for transfers during pre-season and the season to about £22,500.

Dean Calcutt was sold, also to Accrington Stanley, during pre-season, while the club are believed to have received around £2,500 from a sell-on clause in Paddy Kenny's transfer from Bury to Sheffield United - then Avenue chairman Frank Thornton had been hoping for 25 times that amount for the £1 million-rated keeper.

And Avenue will be the first Bradford club to make the trip to Wales this month, but can expect a crowd of around 73,800 less than the Bulls next week.

To travel 120 miles for a UniBond League game against already-relegated Colwyn Bay is hardly the most enticing of fixtures, but it is a necessary evil as Trevor Storton's men play out the final five games of their campaign.

Storton's hope of a top-four finish has all but evaporated with the side picking up just three points in the previous five fixtures.

But they will have as good a chance as in any of their remaining games when they take on a side that last won 14 games ago - at the beginning of the year - and have managed three points just four times all season.

But the Seagulls may still make a fist of this encounter if any of their pent-up anger remains from Avenue's last visit to Llanelian Road. A Saturday trip earlier in the season ended in controversy when the game was abandoned at half-time due to a waterlogged pitch.

At the time Avenue were 2-1 down with Andy Hayward in the nets after Jamie Holmshaw was injured and taken to hospital with a suspected broken ankle.

There was much protesting by the home side and accusations made about the referee but to no avail. Avenue can probably expect a hostile reception.
