Homeless organisations in Bradford have been presented with slices of cash raised by restaurants in the district.

The money was raised through a campaign run by national charity StreetSmart.

Backed by the Telegraph & Argus, it involved diners adding £1 to their restaurant bills for organisations helping the homeless.

A total of £6,210 raised in Bradford has been divided between Bradford Night Stop, Bradford Soup Run and the Place at St Mary's refuge. Each received £2,070.

Representatives from each organisation attended a presentation this week at Shipley restaurant Bossa Nova, which raised more than £1,000 for StreetSmart.

Night Stop provides emergency accommodation for young people in the homes of trained volunteers.

Support and development worker Clare Dalton said the StreetSmart cash would fund toiletries, clothes and transport for the homeless.

"It's wonderful to have this funding, it'll go a long way," she said. "We're very grateful to StreetSmart. It's a fantastic scheme because it's an easy way for people to make donations - and the money goes to local organisations."

The Soup Run is staffed by volunteers who feed up to 70 homeless people each Friday night, Christmas and New Year.

Director John Tempest said: "The money will go towards running costs and refurbishing the pavilion where the soup is served."

The Place at St Mary's is a refuge in a church hall in Barkerend, Bradford.

It is open on Fridays and Bank Holidays, and is used by about 60 people, many of them with mental health and drink problems.

Co-ordinator Dr Jackie Hughes said the StreetSmart cash would keep it going for another year.

"This money is very much needed to keep us going." StreetSmart's Nick Emley praised the T&A and Simon Dunn, owner of Little Germany caf bar Yoyos, for co-ordinating the Bradford campaign.

He said: "It's been a huge success and we hope to do it again this autumn."
