A four-year-old boy was seriously ill in hospital today after being knocked down in a hit and run on the pavement near his home.

The youngster suffered numerous fractures to his skull when he was hit by a Suzuki scooter on Falkland Road, Ravenscliffe, at 3.45pm yesterday.

The scooter was dumped where the boy lay and the rider fled. The boy was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary where police said he was in a "serious, but not life threatening condition" today.

Police were today hunting the scooter rider.

Inspector David White-house, of Bradford North Police, said: "When officers got to the scene the scooter had been dumped on the pavement and there was no sign of the rider."

It is understood the boy had been playing on the pavement, just yards from his home when the accident happened.

A West Yorkshire Ambu-lance spokesman said: "A crew went to the scene and dealt with the boy who we were told had been knocked down. He arrived at Bradford Royal Infirmary at 4.20pm."
