Kirklees Council's Cabinet has given the go-ahead for two new schools to be built at Cleckheaton and Batley to replace Whitcliffe Road First and Nursery School and Carlinghow Princess Royal Junior, Infants and Nursery School.

The new £2.5 million Carlinghow school will cater for 420 pupils, and the £1.5million relocated Whitcliffe Road school for 180, plus nursery pupils. The aim is for both to be completed by summer 2004.

It was originally planned to refurbish both schools as part of the Kirkleeswide public private partnership programme, but building new schools is now seen as the best option.

Councillor John Smithson, Cabinet member for Education and Recreation, said: "Replacement of both of these schools is a much better option. It will see modern state-of-the-art schools to provide the very best education setting for young children in these two areas."

The Whitcliffe Road School will be relocated on a new site at Rawfolds Way. The new Carlinghow school will be built on another part of the existing site.
