A Bradford pensioner was left shocked and angry after a suspected drink-driver smashed into her garden.

Melita Vanloo was woken at 4am by the sound of a car smashing through her front gates and coming to rest in the garden of her Buttershaw home.

The 78-year-old said she was shocked to see the car parked in her drive with the front gates smashed off when she looked out of her bedroom window in the middle of the night.

Ms Vanloo, who suffers from arthritis, said the incident left her shaken and frightened it could happen again.

"You can imagine what the noise was like - it was frightening," she said.

And now she said she is living in fear.

"I haven't eaten anything since it happened," the pensioner said. "I just can't get anything done."

The drama began when the car skidded across the roundabout on Cooper Lane from Reevy Road West, before smashing right through the wall.

Ms Vanloo said she believed the crash would cost hundreds of pounds to repair.

But she said the crash was not a surprise to her. "Cooper Lane is used as a racetrack at night," she said.

"They've got to do something to reduce the speed on the roundabout - they should install something like traffic lights or speed humps."

A man was arrested by police on suspicion of being over the drink-drive limit on Easter Monday.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said the incident was still being investigated.
