"Ready, Teddy, Go!" was the command at Sunday's Guiseley Gallop because starter John Forsyth set the runners off whilst dressed in full teddy boy regalia (had he come straight to the start from the previous evening's Charity Ball)?

Race organiser Peter Rawnsley was rewarded in the race's seventh year with a record entry of 449 finishers and new male and female records.

Winner was Martin Scaiff (Chester le Street) in 34.05 who at the half way stage was around 40 seconds ahead of a chasing group which included Greg Hull (Leeds City) and Willy Smith (Keighley and Craven) who eventually finished in 35.25 and 35.27 respectively.

First lady was Gill Keddie (Leeds City) in 38.52 who finished 17th overall and well ahead of second lady Stephanie Robson (Southampton) in 41.10.

Terry Lonnergan, who supports the race as The Complete Runner, was 55th in 42.47 and category prizes included Male Over-40 Mick Hawkins (Bingley) 35.58 who was 4th overall, Male 45 Gary Armitage (Longwood) in 38.59, Male 50 Steven Moss (Spenborough) in 40.54, Male 55 Mike Walker (Gosforth) in 41.57 and Male 60 Paul Reynard (Fellandale) in 43.50.

First Lady 40 was Kath Drake (Halifax Harriers), who is a past double overall winner, in 44.14 and Lady 45 was Dawn Gibbs (York Acorn) in 45.02.

The Guiseley Gallop was the finale to the Airedale Triple Challenge which included the Meanwood Valley Trail and Baildon Boundary races and required runners to run the cumulative marathon distance over three consecutive weekends.

Around 50 runners completed the three events and Bob Jackson, who organises the Meanwood race, was present at Skyrac's Clubhouse to award prizes to first man Willy Smith (Keighley & Craven) with a total cumulative time of 2.37.55, Male 40 Billy Kerr (Ilkley Harriers) 2.51.11, Male 50 Steven Moss (Spenborough) 2.59.36.

First lady was Karen Dunford in 3.34.19, Over 35 was Kath Drake (Halifax Harriers) in 3.12.12 and Over 45 Yvonne Hampshaw (Aire Centre Pacers) in 3.46.26.

Ilkley Harriers

In Good Friday's Salford 10k, Ilkley Harriers' Terry Lonergan was sixth M50 and 59th overall in a cracking time of 38:13.

Then on Saturday, the Anniversary Waltz fell race attracted a good turnout of Harriers as it was the second race in the English fell championships - and it was a suitably tough race over 11.25m with 3600 ft of climb.

Full results are not yet available, but Ilkley had Alison Weston and Emma Barclay finishing in 2h10; Alison Crane 2h16; Rachael Gooch 2h23; Susie Jollie; Jo Foster; and Chris Porritt in the ladies' team.

For the men, Ilkley had Nick Pearce; Geoff Howard; Jon Sage; Mark Iley; Jim Ryder; Mike Baldwin; Norman Bush; Iain Mann; Morgan Williams; and Phil Chappell in 2h23:10.

Easter Sunday, and on to the Guiseley Gallop, a trail race over 10km. Amongst the runners were Billy Kerr, whose 19th place time of 39:13 was good enough to win him the prize for First Vet 40 in the Airedale Triple Trail Challenge (the other legs being the Meanwood Valley Trail and Baildon Boundary Way).

Track and Field League

Two U-17 athletes got off to flying starts at the first round of The Complete Runner West Yorkshire Track and Field League at York's Huntington Stadium. Laura Kirk (Skyrac AC) dominated the U-17 women's track events with victories in the 300m (42.3s) and the 800m (2.20.7).

She then surprised herself by achieving second place in the high jump with a superb 1.55m.

In the U-17 men's events, Andrew Staniland (Leeds City AC) also had a double victory with 12.62m in the shot (5kg) and 23.4s in the 200m. This latter performance was a personal best by six tenths of a second.

London mini Marathon

At the London Mini Marathon (which precedes the main event and is contested over the last 5km of the course), Horsforth's Elizabeth Spencer Holmfirth Harriers) finished in an excellent fourth place in the 15-17 girls' race.

In the 11-12 girls' category, Menston St Mary's pupil Jodie Gregorczyk (Leeds City AC) was also in top form for eighth position.

At the less exotic, but no less challenging Keighley, Horsforth's Brownlee brothers (both of Bingley Harriers) have been producing impressive performances at the annual Bunny Run Fell Races.

At Bunny Run One (three miles with 300 feet of ascent), Alistair won the U-16 boys' event in 19 mins. 19secs, while Johnny was second in the U-14 race in 23 mins. 20secs. Alistair then continued his winning streak with another fine performance at Bunny Run Two in 18 mins. 47 secs.

Easter Extravaganza

Local athletes won a bucketful of medals (12 in all) at Easter Sunday's Athletics Extravaganza hosted by Rotherham Harriers.

In the U-17 women's events, Horsforth's Bethany Staniland (Leeds City AC) came home with a quartet of gold medals and two personal best performances. Her day started well with a victory in the 300m hurdles in 49.3s, a PB by nearly a second. She then won both the javelin (600g) with 29.66m and the shot Putt (4kg) with 9.69m.However, she saved her best for last as she took the discus (1kg) with a new personal best of 31.69m. This throw also won the senior women's competition.

Skyrac's Georgina Ablett in the U-15 girls extended her personal bests in two throwing events. She won the discus (1kg) with a magnificent 26.49m and was second in the shot (3.25kg) with 8.74m.
