Record numbers put their best foot forward on Easter Monday to raise money for Manorlands.

Over 60 people - plus seven dogs - took part in an annual sponsored walk for the Oxenhope Sue Ryder Care Centre.

The event is expected to coin in at least £2,500. The walk - a nine-and-a-half-mile circular - was along the Senior Way, which closely follows the Cullingworth parish boundaries.

The route was established by the then chairman of the local parish council, John Brigg, and his vice-chairman Ron Senior.

It was dedicated to the memory of Mr Senior after his death nine years ago. The sponsored walk, organised by the Manorlands' Cullingworth Support Group, is now held annually along the route.

Mr Brigg said: "I was very pleased with the turn out, it was the best we have ever had. A big thank you to everyone who came along."

Among those taking part was a team - carrying a barrel - from the Fleece pub, at Cullingworth.

Numerous other activities - organised by licensees Barry Shaw and Glynis Jones - were held at the pub as part of a charity day to coincide with the walk.

There was a raffle and an auction, featuring about 20 lots. Auctioneer was actor Ken Kitson, who also signed autographs.

A children's disco and karaoke were held, and there were sponsored head and beard shaves. The pub's effort raised over £1,700 for the hospice, with more money still to come in.

Mr Shaw - who was among those to lose their beards - said: "It was a brilliant day and I would like to thank everyone who gave their support." The next Manorlands fundraiser at the Fleece is an auction night on May 31.
