PICKING up other people's litter might not be everybody's idea of a fun way to spend their Easter break but two Barnoldswick schoolgirls have put their elders to shame.

Twelve-year-old Leanne Breckon and her friend Nicola Bell, 13 spent last Thursday picking up after thoughtless drivers coming in and out of the town discarding their rubbish.

They collected an amazing 30 bags of rubbish from the road sides in the town.

They were spurred on to do the litter pick after a talk at West Craven High School about the work of the RSPCA and cruelty to animals.

They learned, among other things, that the rubbish in grass verges causes injury and spreads diseases to local wildlife, as well as being unpleasant to see.

They hope to raise awareness, and around £100 for the animal charity, by doing the pick.

They were accompanied by Pendle Borough councillor Jenny Purcell who contacted the council for fluorescent jackets, litter bags and long handled pickers.

"And now I'm putting a challenge out to Pendle Council to give them a donation, seeing how they have done their job for them!" she said.

Starting at Brow Ghyll, the girls made their way along Skipton Road to the edge of the town, before moving on to the section of Kelbrook Road around West Craven High School and the West Craven Pool and Sports Hall. They also cleared the Langford Close area.

But Mrs Purcell is still not happy with Pendle Council, saying that nobody came to pick up the rubbish after the girls had done the hard work.

"Barlick should be proud of them. Adults should take note," she said.
