A campaign by young people in Grassington for a wheel park for skateboards, in-line skates and mini-scooters has received a big boost.

Members of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority property committee have agreed in principle to leasing land near the bowling green in Colvend Car Park for the venture.

Young people in the village collected more than 100 signatures on a petition supporting the idea of a wheel park.

Last month, the national park authority was sent a detailed proposal for the park by Sarah King, senior youth leader at Wharfedale Youth Club.

She said that the national park land was a reasonable distance from residential areas but not too far in case of emergencies.

The car park was well used so there would be plenty of people around and it was easy for the police to keep an eye on.

The property committee visited the site last Thursday before making its decision.

It was told that the parish council and Grassington and District Bowling Club supported the wheel park proposal in principle.

However, Eric James, secretary of the bowling club, had told the authority it had major concerns about siting it within 100 yards of its south west boundary.

Mr James said the visual distraction to bowlers made the two activities incompatible.

Members agreed that if go-ahead was given for the park, there should be a clause in the lease preventing the use of floodlights and another one to ensure that the park was reinstated to grass if no longer needed.
