A family funeral service was being held today for a Shipley soldier killed in Iraq during the early days of the conflict.

Family and friends were gathering at Egloshayle Parish Church near Sergeant Steven Roberts's former home town of Wadebridge, Cornwall.

Desert Rats tank commander Sgt Roberts, 33, was shot through the chest during a riot in Al Zubayr, near Basra, just three days after the conflict began.

Today's service followed a full military funeral on Wednesday at St Wilfred's Church, Harrogate, not far from the Army Foundation College where he was an instructor.

Sgt Roberts was raised and went to school in Wadebridge. He and his wife had moved to Shipley before he was deployed to the Gulf.

An Army inquiry is under way into his death to establish if his flak jacket was fitted with ceramic plates.

The funeral of another Gulf war victim had also taken place on Wednesday at All Saints Church, Batley.

Father-of-one L/Cpl Brierley, 29, had died on duty in Kuwait from head injuries after a Land Rover crash.

L/Cpl Brierley was a member of 212 Signal Squadron which provides communications for HQ 1 (UK) Armoured Division.

He had been a Radio Systems Operator for nine years.
