A village is set to welcome back hundreds of motorbike fans at the UK's biggest Harley-Davidson rally - despite fears of trouble.

To make sure the event goes smoothly, the organisers have hired private security. The move follows controversy last year when the rally was on the verge of being cancelled because of troubles from gatecrashers in 2001.

Mick Bray, landlord of the Malt Shovel pub in Baildon, where the event takes place, said: "The regulars are 100 per cent behind the bikers.

"A lot of friendships have been struck between the bikers and the locals."

Kev Scrivner, of the Harley-Davidson Riders' Club, said that despite no problems last year, the security is an extra measure to reassure residents.

Riders will travel to Bradford from as far afield as Holland and Germany during August Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate the centenary of the legendary motorcycle company.

The rally raises money for the Anthony Nolan Trust, and the charity will welcome the riders with a huge banner in Shipley. It raised £1,100 last year, but organisers hope this year's event will raise even more.

Each year the riders enjoy a ride-out, during which hundreds of soft toys are collected for children in hospitals.

Eddy Robinson, Chairman of the Baildon Friends of the Anthony Nolan Trust, said: "This rally is very important because it is one of the major sources of income for our group in Baildon. It is highly valuable to us."

Businesses and pubs also benefit from the rally, which provides their busiest weekend of the year.

The generosity is extending to the community, as some of the bikers will help the pub's own charity bed push in July.

The rally includes trade stalls, a charity raffle, a disco and live music, all served up with plenty of food and drink.

Organiser Mr Scrivner, of the Harley-Davidson Riders' Club said: "It's a great party, with bands every night and awards for the best bikes."

The 24th International Harley-Davidson Rally will be held at Dobruddon Caravan Site in Baildon, Shipley between August 22 and 25.
