A father-of-two who slashed a man's face with a Stanley knife has been jailed for 15 months.

Jason McLoughlin was taken to hospital suffering cuts to his top lip and throat after a fight outside a pub in February last year.

He required stitches for both wounds but is now believed to have made a full recovery.

Robert Tomes, 22, of Crediton Avenue, Allerton, pleaded guilty to wounding.

Bradford Crown Court heard how a minor dispute between the two men took place in the Prince of Wales pub in Allerton before a fight erupted outside.

During the incident, Tomes pulled out the knife from his pocket and cut Mr McLoughlin with it.

Mitigating, Jonathan Gibson said Tomes - who had the knife after fitting a carpet earlier that day - took it out when Mr McLoughlin got the better of him in the fight.

Judge Robert Bartfield said: "The injuries were not life-threatening - that's fortunate. If his movement had been different, it may be that young man would not be alive today."

He accepted that Mr McLoughlin was not slashed deliberately with the knife.

But he told Tomes: "If you use a knife in a fight, you will go to prison."
