Gareth Evans, a 23-year-old shift manager at McDonalds, won the Hawksworth Trophy at Bradford Golf Club after a dramatic sudden-death play-off with Richard Oddy.

Northcliffe's Evans, last year's best amateur in the Bradford Open Championship, appreciated the rain intervening.

"I knew I was playing well going into the competition," said Evans. "It started raining in the afternoon and I don't mind that."

Both Evans and Lightcliffe's Oddy scored 141 in their two rounds. In the sudden death, the two parred the eleventh, but on the 12th Evans hit a seven iron to within six feet of the 142-yard short hole. Oddy pushed his shot left into a bunker.

Evans birdied the hole to win.

Neil Evans, who was caddying for his son, said: "Gareth was really on his game but the conditions were tricky."

The Hawksworth Trophy - a 36-hole scratch tournament - provides some early-season competition for the region's top golfers before the big events begin.

Now Gareth teams up with his Northcliffe partner Andy Town to defend their 36-hole foursomes strokeplay championship at Keighley on Sunday.

It is the first big Bradford Union tournament of the season and Bradford Union secretary Brian Newiss is looking forward to the event.

"There will be a strong field as usual. Playing foursomes can be quite tricky," he said.

"Players team up who can click together. After all, you can be playing somebody else's mistake!"

Entry is restricted to two teams from each club and the top 16 teams qualify for the inter-club foursomes matchplay competition - which Evans and Town also won last year.
