Burley'S Waddilove Cup hopes for the season ended on Sunday with a preliminary round defeat by Bilton.

Burley failed by just seven runs to match the Bilton score of 179-5 which came in the main from opener Miles Corish with 44, Imran Younis Malik with an unbeaten 52 and Mick Emmerson with 43.

None of the Burley bowlers really got to grips with the situation.

Burley made a good start with Chris Wheeler making a bold 44 and Australian Ben Harris 37 but Ian Normington apart there was no real support and the innings petered out at 172-9.

Ben Rhydding's 138-9 was an easy target for Colton who knocked off the runs in 32 overs. Opener G Pickles and N Winterbottom made useful contributions of 28 but in the main Ben Rhydding struggled against the bowling of M Stalgis (3-20) and J Roberts (3-21).

Colton lost a couple of early wickets but then a good knock of 49 from Johnny Johnson steered them towards victory and the job was completed by D Wright and R Horner each with 25 not out.

Hall Park gained a seven runs win over Otley after being restricted to 131-9 by some good bowling from Bob Hodson (1-18 off nine overs), Michael Elliott (1-19 off nine) and Richard Allinson (2-19 off nine).

Park were then dismissed for 124 as spinner Robert Atkinson claimed 3-11 and paceman Scott Johnson 3-20.

Burley Seconds threw away a winning situation at home to Bilton in Sunday's Birtwhistle Cup tie. With five wickets in hand and chasing 16 runs for victory with four overs left they contrived to pluck defeat from the jaws of victory.

There was a collective failure which hopefully the team will learn from but it will be another year before that experience can be tested in the cup.

In the remaining Birtwhistle Cup ties there were wins for Colton over Ben Rhydding and Hall Park over Otley.

In the third teams cup preliminary round Guiseley gained a massive 174 runs win over Calverley.

Guiseley made 241-6 with Southport goalkeeper Steve Dickinson recovering from the misery of his side's relegation to the UniBond League to make 61 not out. Calverley were dismissed for 67, Joe Davies taking 3-20 and Sam Wilkinson 2-4 while Adam Perring, Tom Adams, Steve Dickinson and Robert Butterfield each bagged a wicket.
