Otley's Farmers' Market is celebrating a landmark after bringing thousands of people into the town during its first year.

The popular monthly market was set up last May by the Otley Town Partnership to attract people to the town and to give a boost to Wharfedale farmers who were hard hit by the foot and mouth epidemic.

At last Sunday's market, Morris dancers The Butter-cross Belles performed for traders and visitors to celebrate its first anniversary.

The market, which is based in the Market Place in Otley, started off with 20 stalls and now has more than 30 and a long waiting list of new businesses wanting to join it.

Chairman of the Partnership's Marketing Task Group John Batchelor said: "It is a credit to the Partnership.

"In particular thanks must go to Geoff Johnson, who has been doing an excellent job running the market since November.

"Our appreciation also goes to the people of Otley who have supported the market over the last 12 months.

"The long waiting list of producers wanting a space at the market is testament to its success."

The market sells home produced vegetables, meat, fish, herbs and oils and cakes and pastries.

Recently it has started selling locally produced mushrooms and timber products.

Pig farmer Grant Burton said: "We attend a number of farmers' markets in the area and like many who sell in Otley, I feel this is one of the best around.

"Not just because it is always busy, but there is a really friendly atmosphere too."

The market ensures that the produce sold is locally produced and to a high standard.

The market attracts hundreds of people both locally and from places such as Cumbria and Newcastle, it runs from 10am to 2pm in the Market Place, Otley.

Back in May last year, Otley's first ever farmers' market was declared a great success by organisers as thousands of people flocked to the Market Place despite appalling weather.

Stall holders sold out within two hours and for more than an hour after the market opened there was so many people in the square that it was difficult to get to the stalls.
